THE BEST BEACH THE WORLD: Brazil has World Cup AND Best Beach
As Brazil gears up for World Cup fever, one of its beaches has been named the world’s favourite – and it’s not Copacabana. Voters on TripAdvisor have named Baia do Sancho as the world’s best beach.
It’s no surprise that Brazil’s beaches would secure a few places on the Travelers’ Choice Awards list. But a trip to Baia do Sancho is a Brazil vacation with a difference. The beach is located on Fernando de Noronha, a bona fide eco-wonderland and beach-lover’s Shangri-La.
Having never been connected to the mainland, this volcanic archipelago is home to just under 3,000 people and a treasure trove of endemic species. Until 1957, the islands were used as a prison colony. In 1988, 70% of the area was declared a maritime national park, and is now recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Baia do Sancho jumped from #4 spot in last year’s awards to claim top TripAdvisor honors in 2014. The victory comes just as globetrotters and football fans make plans for the FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted in twelve cities across Brazil in June and July. For some, Fernando de Noronha will be an easy and spectacular side trip, positioned a short flight from three of the host cities – Fortaleza, Natal and Recife.
